2012: Transforming the Bridge | 12374

Team: Remco De Haan, Rozemarijn Dam

Location: Northcote, Victoria, Australia

Overview: The CATWALK is..

1.Connecting points of interests, by creating a route as a network. This route connects three important places: the theatre as major activity, the bridge as an icon and the metro junction for accessibility. The connection between them stimulates the use of three interesting historical elements: the lower part of the bridge, the viaduct on the West wharf and the old bridge at the side of the theatre. On a bigger scale, this route connects the two parts of the city with an interactive, urban, cultural park.

2.Activating the area, by adding more functions and activities along the route. The bridge is the central axis which will be activated through different small functions inside, expanded with supporting functions around it. Attracting functions will be entertainment, dining, nightlife, overnight stay, sports, leisure and retail. Where a shopping centre, residences and office space act as supporting functions which will stimulate the transformation of the whole area.

3.Interacting with the activity through a sensor sensitive lightning design. Which is self-sufficient through semi-transparent solar cells attached to the arch construction of the bridge. Changing colours of light will show different atmospheres and activities, creates liveliness and attracts passers. Instead of being a dark and scary space at night it creates an interesting place to be, a protected route to pass and a spectacular decor for the surrounding area.
