The introduction of shipping containers as the basic building blocks of this proposal represents a light touch intervention with minimal disturbance or alteration to the bridge structure. Modifications beyond the placement of the units on the bridge are limited to graphic treatments of the structure and surfaces (paint) and the addition of the east and west external entry structures.

The utilization of the ISBU as the single note in this composition achieves several advantages. The containers, a byproduct of the nationÕs trade deficit and the inexpensive production of containers abroad, are cost effective and readily available. The simply yet sturdy construction of the containers is condusive to easy and varied adaptation and retrofit. They units have standard dimensions of 8Õ width, 8Õ-6Ó height and 20Õ, 30Õ or 40Õ lengths and can be easily connected in multiples.

The ease of installation and independent nature of each unit or group of units allows for a sequenced or phased process of realization. In this way the project can start small and grow organically. Each scene, or programmatic installation, can be realized as funding or sponsorhip is made available through government agencies, non-profit arts or education organizations, or private entities or individuals.
