2012: Transforming the Bridge | 12306

Team: Corrie Hood,

Location: Fort Worth, Texas

Overview: Buskers’ Park
The lower level of Veteran’s Memorial Bridge will connect Cleveland’s arts districts to emerging neighborhoods on the west side of the river. The arts theme will be continued by using the space as a park and public performance venue for buskers or street performers. An oscilloscope readout of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony will provide the data points for the park forms. The visual wave will undergo a sea change and the resulting layout will define the main pedestrian path, vegetation and individual performance areas of the park.New public access points will be created at the first open air arches emerging from the subway space. Wooden ramps that match the park’s main pedestrian walkway will connect the bridge to the ground below. These new access points will replace all the existing underground access
previously used to enter the bridge’s lower levels. The subway spaces, or catacombs, will act as anchor destinations to accompany the park’s performance activities. The subways will be terraced to create level space, and then enclosed. The intent is that these spaces would be leased and finished out by bars, restaurants and entertainment venues, continuing the theme of the east bank arts districts.
