2012: Transforming the Bridge | 12293

Overview: The Detroit-Superior Bridge is an historic icon of Cleveland’s identity, but a major part of this great asset is under-utilized and a hospitality/ leisure resort center at this location could attract people from all around Lake Erie into the city’s economy. A bridge level observation lounge, a ‘chef’s table/ dining room kitchen’ restaurant, 2 casino gaming areas with their own lounges, 90 luxury hotels suites, and over 30 tenant vendor retail/ cafe shops add to the adjacent performing arts district. Vertical circulation towers provide multiple access points along the length of the bridge to draw more individuals into the space. The bridge’s existing historical architecture is maintained as the focal aesthetic with the addition of waterproofing systems, modern glass enclosure systems, and vertical egress towers for people to safely occupy a space originally designed for street car traffic. The additional vertical towers reflect the existing architecture elements with the addition of modern glass cap tops to house today’s technological communication equipment and gather rain water for a sustainable aspect of the project. The presentation of these drawings reflects the ‘Settlers Landing’ Rapid Transit Station design of hand drawn classic glass etchings by a local Cleveland artist.
