2012: Transforming the Bridge | 12268

Team: Thad Rhoden, Lindsey Rhoden, Peyton Shumate

Location: Asheville, North Carolina

Overview: Cleveland has a population approaching 400,000 residents. One quarter of the population changes due to daytime commuters, an above average statistic for cities of this size. Of those 100,000 residents, over half commute alone and isolated.
This project seeks to encourage interaction and bolster community.According to the US Census, Cleveland experienced a 17.1% decrease in population since 2000. Positive population trends are critical for a healthy, local economy. This project will be a catalyst to increase urban activity.Another statistic critical to consider is the 27% obesity rate of Ohio. In addition to genetics, environment and lifestyle are major factors that contribute to obesity. This project will set a precedent for an intentional sense of place and path that promotes a healthy and active lifestyle.

This design proposes to generate safe, lively pedestrian and bicycle paths along the Lower Level. These paths have been purposefully interrupted with program to encourage interaction, activity & enjoyment. Throughout the bridge, a quantification of people will be represented in real time with reactive illumination & digital displays. Individuals will take pride in the bridge because they continually have a role in making the bridge and city beautiful.}
