2012: Transforming the Bridge | 12265

Team: Christopher Diehl, Mykie Hrusovski

Location: Cleveland, Ohio

Overview: The Cleveland Spin is an iconic addition to the Cleveland skyline, offering dynamic views of the city. A bridge that once possessed a limited viewshed now allows vistas to Cleveland Heights, Rocky River and on clear days, even a glimpse of Canada.

The Spin, comprised of a 400 foot vertical observation wheel and a 500 seat horizontal performance carousel, activates multiple levels of the bridge, allowing for passenger load-in from the upper and lower platforms, or guests can enter directly from commercial tour boats stopped at the river level. As opposed to a strictly linear movement across the bridge, the public is now encouraged to transfer between multiple levels. For instance, a couple can bike from the Detroit Shoreway, catch a performance on the lower deck, and then ride the Spin either down to the riverfront or continue up to a romantic moment above the city.

The second major addition to the bridge is the performance carousel, a moving live music venue and viewing platform. Concert goers and passersby can step onto the slowly rotating platform that revolves around a fixed performance stage, offering a one-of-a-kind concert experience. Of course there are no bad seats.
