2012: Transforming the Bridge | 12248

Overview: As the bridge stands now, the pedestrian is compressed on the lower level concourse, but experiences slight release in the central span. Our strategy is to accentuate both experiences by sheltering the pedestrian for most of the bridge, and make the central span a destination that releases and suspends the pedestrian high above the Cuyahoga Valley with excellent views of the Cleveland skyline and Lake Erie. The suspended central span uses the existing structure of the center steel arch for support and formal language. The primary goal is to create an active space that invites Cleveland’s downtown residents and workforce alike to participate every day of the year. The redesigned bridge establishes a new beacon for downtown – a recognizable landmark – that will draw in visitors from miles around
