2012: Transforming the Bridge | 12237

Team: Nate Russell, Li Qiu, Anni Pi

Location: Syracuse, New York

Overview: Opportunistic Adjacency creates intensified urban conditions that become a catalyst for Cleveland by overlapping programs in the same space and leveraging unique critical adjacencies between the bridge and the city.

Connecting the bridge to the larger context of the city will make the bridge more than just commodifying an infrastructural relic as destination or spectacle. The temporal nature of pop_up programs will facilitate incremental growth over time, a time line that is neglected by investors and political cycles. The bridge will act as an economic armature for Cleveland as it enters the future state of 21st century urbanism.
Opportunistic Adjacency celebrates the raw landscape surrounding the Detroit-Superior Bridge by creating a relationship with it at critical elevations. Projecting media onto nearby buildings, connecting trails to the river and train station, locating programs with respect to unique views to the surrounding neighborhoods and Lake Erie gives energy back to the industry and landscape that makes the great city of Cleveland.
Just as the bridge is intensified by its relation to the surrounding industrial area through adjacencies and correlating elevations, programs are paired and played off of each other to create unique urban conditions. The effect of the energy from these programmatic adjacencies will grow from the bridge out into the city.
