2012: Transforming the Bridge | 12231

Overview: We propose to build on the lively atmosphere of the Warehouse District and draw on the historic Flats from one bank of the Cuyahoga to the other. The Bridge becomes a new local “street” within a historic space, bringing both sides together. A place which, by its content, will encourage people to look at the Flats from a different point of view and to visit a neighborhood half a mile away on foot or by bike.

The Bridge as a hybrid between a building and a transit route, and on its lower level, connecting and amplifying public life on both sides of the river. West and East Side should not exist independent of each other, therefore we propose to redefine the Bridge as a hub connecting neighborhoods by creating a common pedestrian space for many social activities which will grow new social and cultural qualities.

The Bridge will seek to foster more events than currently happen on the Bridge and in the surrounding neighborhoods. The intention is to open the Bridge up for more possibilities and provide conditions for integration between different groups of population. The Bridge will amplify and extend public life on both sides of Cuyahoga River.
