2012: Transforming the Bridge | 12224

Overview: A functional active city is similar to a living leaf, where a vein pumps and feeds its cells with nutrition. The motivation for restoring the Detroit Superior Bridge is to become a¡¥vein¡¦in the city, bringing people and activities into the pockets of space within the bridge, and further connect the east side activities to the west.
The Detroit Superior Bridge is mostly divided into 3 sections, with access fixed between sections other then the central span. This limitation dictates our proposed arrangement of space, creating the two different space – ‘traffic route’ and ‘activity space’.
The ‘traffic routes’ are aimed for cyclists and pedestrians, and would be free and easy to access at all times of the day and night. The ‘activity space’ is to accommodate various community activities. The proposed arrangment allows a usable ‘traffic route’ while ‘activity space’ is being used whether at night or day.
