2012: Transforming the Bridge | 12191

Team: Kyle McMahon

Location: Ames, Iowa

Overview: Six lanes of vehicular traffic and a small pedestrian path on the upper level create potential dangers. The pedestrian traffic needs to be relocated to the lower level. This design accommodates for the continuous flow of pedestrians as well as those who pause to take in the view. It focuses primarily on the users who want to get from point A to point B quickly and safely. Three resting points at strategic view points and three large welcoming park-like open space entries accommodate those who are simply enjoying the space.
These defined resting points feature an elevated view to enhance the users experience by bring them to the edge. It gives them a true sense of how elevated they actually are. Two entries on the east accommodate both bikers and walkers. The north entrance has steps and is primarily for walkers. Bicyclists can access the bridge through sloped grade of the south entrance.
All pedestrians can access the bridge from the west. Planters with grasses, shrubs, and trees are placed throughout the entries. Wrought iron gives the seating and railings an old yet new feel to the bridge. Smooth black asphalt identifies bike traffic while green colored concrete and wooden flooring marks foot traffic.
