2012: Transforming the Bridge | 12173

Overview: When visiting Cleveland for the very first time, I had one thing on my mind, The Detroit-Superior Bridge. As I think about my focus coming to Cleveland, it made me wonder why any one else would make the same journey for this single structure connecting Cleveland’s west side and downtown. After a brief 2-hour tour, my thoughts were clear, there needs to be a clear integration and connectivity into the lower level of the bridge. Walking on the upper level where the main traffic flow currently is was less than enjoyable and I was frightened for the bikers being grazed by large semi trucks.

My proposal is simple. Integrate the circulation that is happening on and near the bridge and people will come to the bridge to enjoy the variety of events Cleveland has to offer. It was amazing to experience the west side market and Ingenuity Fest, two major events occurring while visiting the site. And news of the Cleveland RipeFest and community garden activities were enlightening. By integrating a safe and easy-to-access bike path and reconnecting the Towpath Trail, trail users will have a much more enjoyable experience in Cleveland.
