Dear Competition Entrants and friends of the Cleveland Design Competition,

On behalf of the entire advisory committee for the 2012 Cleveland Design Competition, we are pleased to inform you that the winners for the 2012 Cleveland Design Competition have been announced! Over 160 submissions from 24 countries were submitted to the 2012 Cleveland Design Competition.

Last evening (October 26th), Armando Carbonell, Senior Fellow at the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and the Cleveland Design Competition Co-founders announced the winning submissions at the 2012 Cleveland Design Competition Awards Reception and Exhibition which was held inside the West Catacombs of the Detroit Superior Bridge. Over the next month we are going to be diligently working on getting the full gallery of submissions up on the competition webpage (starting of course with the winners and honorable mentions). Thank you in advance for being patient with the amount of time it will take us to sort through the digital information and get the gallery up. Don’t forget that tonight is the 2012 Cleveland Design Competition Exhibition and Awards Reception!

Today’s festivities will be taking place where else but inside the West Catacombs of the Detroit Superior Bridge! Because everything is weather protected, we will be hosting the reception regardless of rain or shine.

The bridge is located at:

Cleveland, Ohio

To get there from downtown you will be taking the Detroit Superior Bridge heading west. Turn right at West 25th. Turn right at Vermont Avenue (Superior Viaduct). Turn right into the first or second parking lot and you are there.

We are pleased to announce we have begun uploading the video tours of the Detroit-Superior Bridge!

In an effort to provide as complete an understanding of the existing conditions of the bridge for the preparation of conceptual ideas for the 2012 Cleveland Design Competition, we have taken over 1 hour of video footage. Currently there are three videos completed that have either been uploaded or are being uploaded to the Cleveland Design Competition webpage here: http://clevelandcompetition.com/bridge-video-tours/ Video #2 is shown here in this post, please keep an eye out for future video posts!

Video 1 – West Entrance to Lower Level (1:27)
This is a video that takes you from the Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works office and maintenance garage entrances to the entrance into the lower level of the bridge from their parking lot.

Video 2 – From the West Entrance to the West Catacombs (7:01)
This video takes you from that same entrance all the way into the West Catacombs section of the bridge.

Video 3 – From West Catacombs across the bridge to the East Pool (14:21)
This video takes you all the way from the West Catacombs, completely across the entire bridge to the East Pool. Each video has text commentary that periodically appears further explaining what the viewer is seeing.

As we hope you have noticed by now, a number of resources have been provided for use by competiton entrants in preparation of design solutions.

We have tried to capture the esssenence of the bridge through photography from one end of the bridge to the other. One thing that has been brought to our attention is that even though the photography is categorized by location on the bridge, it is still difficult to get a truly comprehensive understanding of how each section of the bridge connects to one another. For a map of the different sections, please refer to the Context Map provided on the Resources page – http://clevelandcompetition.com/site-maps/

Soon, we will documenting the entire length of the bridge by video. Please keep an eye on the blog and resources page for that update. While you are waiting for the official video produced by the Cleveland Design Competition, there is an amateur video that was taken by an attendee of one of the tours of the Detroit-Superior Bridge. Please feel free to take a few minutes to review the following two videos until we can release our videos and thank you in advance for your patience.
